My tip: check out the background of what's in your shots. This is a big problem when I'm shooting in my kitchen - too much stuff on the counter! It's good to setup an area (like, a portion of the counter) that is clear of everything except the subject matter so you can easily do your shooting there.
The day I bought a ring light, my photography improved immensely. Unfortunately, then I broke the ring light. C'est la vie.
Also, to get a diffuse, but beautiful light, put whatever you're photographing under the light over the stove (if you have one) and cover that light with a coffee filter.
I bought some big artists papers (the huge pieces of colored papers) and boards for this reason, so I wasn't always taking a picture of "something on the stove."
